Summary

3。75-4。25 starsThis was a very intense， very dark， intricate high fantasy book。 I couldn’t help but compare it to Nevernight and it didn’t quite live up to the unique perfection that Nevernight was for me， but I still enjoyed the read。 I read Empire slowly， and I’m glad I did because I would have missed a lot of details if I hadn’t。At its core it felt like a book about faith， and losing/keeping your faith during the worst times of your life。 It was a mixture of Interview with a Vampire， Deadpool 3。75-4。25 starsThis was a very intense， very dark， intricate high fantasy book。 I couldn’t help but compare it to Nevernight and it didn’t quite live up to the unique perfection that Nevernight was for me， but I still enjoyed the read。 I read Empire slowly， and I’m glad I did because I would have missed a lot of details if I hadn’t。At its core it felt like a book about faith， and losing/keeping your faith during the worst times of your life。 It was a mixture of Interview with a Vampire， Deadpool and Game of Thrones for me。Content Warning: Animal death， murder， abuse， alcoholism， violence and more that I know I am forgetting。 I recommend perusing different reviews for content warnings。 。。。more

4。25 StarsI just wanted to start if off by saying that Empire of the Vampire is my most anticipated book of the year so I had crazy high expectations。 I received a sampler that’s about 400 pages and I believe the final copy is around 750 pages。 So with me having read a little over half of the book I can confidently say that this has the possibility of becoming a 5 star read once I finish the book。This book has an interesting narrative。 We have present day Gabriel， who is imprisoned， recounting h 4。25 StarsI just wanted to start if off by saying that Empire of the Vampire is my most anticipated book of the year so I had crazy high expectations。 I received a sampler that’s about 400 pages and I believe the final copy is around 750 pages。 So with me having read a little over half of the book I can confidently say that this has the possibility of becoming a 5 star read once I finish the book。This book has an interesting narrative。 We have present day Gabriel， who is imprisoned， recounting his life to a vampire。 He tells the story with 2 timelines。 The first is him discovering he’s a half-vampire and following his journey as he joins the Silver Order in order to fight against the creatures of the night。 The second timeline is him much older and known as a bit of a legend。 He’s a broken man and stumbles upon an old friend who might have found the solution to the war against vampires， The Holy Grail。 At first， I struggled to connect with the story as Gabriel and the vampire he’s telling his story to would interrupt saying snarky/sassy remarks。 This happened less frequently as the story went on and I actually started to look forward to these moments as they were really entertaining。 As with most dual timeline stories， I did enjoy one slightly more that the other but I think the author did a really good job at making them both interesting。I loved the characters in this。 He did such a good job of balancing dark themes and humour but also making them unique。 Even thought there was 2 timelines going on， I never mixed up different characters。 I will say that Talon was probably my favourite。 His insults were legendary。 It was really cool seeing illustrations throughout as well。 I’m the worst for remembering character descriptions so having the awesome illustrations really helped me to visualize everything。 Can’t wait to see the rest。I think that most fans of his Nevernight series will really enjoy Empire of the Vampire as it has the same type of vibes and dark tone/humour as Nevernight。I’m now impatiently waiting for one of my preorders of the final copy to arrive to finish。I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Incredibly inventive and unique。 A new mold for vampire lore and the fantasy genre。 Characters who bring to mind those of Joe Abercrombie， Scott Lynch， Christopher Buehlman， and James Islington。 But reader be warned。 You think George RR Martin is brutal to his characters？ Jay Kristoff spits “Bitch please。 Hold my beer。”

I was so into the story and got to the last page and found out that the eARC I got is just a sampler of the book。 I was planning on getting this book on hard cover and after what I read I cannot wait for the weekend to go get my copy。 I love how we were reading about the events that take place in the past and is like reading an interview with the vampire， which it is in fact a vampire， LOL。Well， I can only say that I’m in love with what I read :）

This book…in times I could not stop reading in other times I did not feel connected。 I think this might be a really powerful book for some but for me。。 it was not all that I hoped for loving Nevernight as deeply as I do。 To be clear， I am not a reader who seeks stories of gore and vampires which this book has aplenty。 Although those are not my favourite tropes I did enjoy this book a great deal， make of that what you will。

3。5 StarsI am a big Jay Kristoff fan and was really looking forward to EOTV and although I definitely enjoyed it， I feel it didn't live up to my expectations in many regards。 I am actually stuck between rating it 3。5 or 4 stars but have decided to go with 3。5。Sadly I found the plot to be a little basic， there was an obvious journey and reason but it seemed a little simple。 Because it was also 700 pages， it felt really drawn out and especially in the first half of the book， I found myself a littl 3。5 StarsI am a big Jay Kristoff fan and was really looking forward to EOTV and although I definitely enjoyed it， I feel it didn't live up to my expectations in many regards。 I am actually stuck between rating it 3。5 or 4 stars but have decided to go with 3。5。Sadly I found the plot to be a little basic， there was an obvious journey and reason but it seemed a little simple。 Because it was also 700 pages， it felt really drawn out and especially in the first half of the book， I found myself a little bored and disconnected from the story。 I did like the world building and found all the different types of vampires to be really interesting。 I wish there had been more seeing all their tricks and powers。I am a bit of a wuss but I didn't even find this book scary。 There were definitely some tense moments but I was never actually scared。 I think this is because I didn't feel connected to really any of the characters and that is a very important thing for me when reading。 I definitely liked and respected a lot of the characters but there was a connection missing。I also wish the map had been a little clearer as many of the cities rhat are apparently surrounded by water just look on dry land on the map。The second half of the book was definitely better than the first half and the final 100 pages were the best in the book。 It just took a long time to get there and a lot of the filler could have easily been taken out。 The way the story was told， as an interview just didn't work for me。 I was looking forward to this different way of storytelling but it didn't add anything to me orher than chopping the story up and stopping the flow。 I see why Jay switched between two timelines but I wasn't a huge fan of it。 I also guessed a lot of the twists and thought they were pretty obvious。There is a lot of swearing which doesn't bother me and definitely added to the humour at times。 Jay said there was a lot of smut but there was only a few scenes that weren't actually that smutty。That being said， it was well written and had some great ideas and worldbuilding。 I really enjoyed the school/dark acadamia parts but wished we had seen more of the actual training。The Kristoff humour that I love in all his other books was definitely there and made me laugh quite a few times。 I personally think Nevernight is a much better book but I still did enjoy reading this book and will definitely be carrying on the series。 。。。more

"There's a strength to be found in hatred。 There's a courage forged only in rage。"This is only one of many， many great lines from Jay Kristoff's "Empire of the Vampire" that are simply begging to be pulled out and quoted on social media， tattooed on bodies， and printed on merchandise for all the world to see。 And you know what？ I'm not even mad about it， because this book deserves it。 This book deserves a fandom。 This book deserves fans， and that's why I'm so glad it's already planned out to be "There's a strength to be found in hatred。 There's a courage forged only in rage。"This is only one of many， many great lines from Jay Kristoff's "Empire of the Vampire" that are simply begging to be pulled out and quoted on social media， tattooed on bodies， and printed on merchandise for all the world to see。 And you know what？ I'm not even mad about it， because this book deserves it。 This book deserves a fandom。 This book deserves fans， and that's why I'm so glad it's already planned out to be a saga， because it'd be a shame to let all this potential go to waste with a single book and nothing else to show for it。 As most readers of genre fiction， I've grown wary of vampire fiction。 So， needless to say， I approached this book with caution。 Almost with trepidation， I'd say。 But I was more than pleasantly surprised: I was sucked right the hell in。 It's not that "Empire of the Vampire" is totally original。 That'd be an absurd thing to expect from any vampire novel。 Because， let's face it， there's a reason why we've all become wary of vampire novels！ But it seems Kristoff is self-aware enough to know better than to condescend to his readers and act like he's coming from an entirely original place here。 Several vampire and non-vampire related （but still fantasy-related） allusions， impressions， references， and what I like to call "the feel of" are definitely present here。 As a reader （and of course I cannot tell you if this is what Kristoff intended）， these are the various influences that came to mind as I was reading: "Interview with a Vampire"， Trinity Blood （the anime）， Blood + （the anime）， Game of Throne （the TV show）， D&D， "In the Name of the Wind"， an episode of NCIS I can't remember the name of （and I just KNOW this is probably me because I'm weird）， and a few more I forgot to take notes about。 There are rich descriptions of each character meant to play a major part， and they are a motley crew rich with diversity and with varying degrees of foul mouths。 My favorite character in probably the whole book is Seraph Talon， who not only has the foulest mouth out of any of the characters， but also has the most original insults I've ever seen written on the page。 I'm not even going to quote a single damn one because you all deserve a chance to discover them for the first time yourselves。 But I'm pretty sure I laughed， snorted， or snickered at each and every one。 The written depictions of the scenery and the journey（s） that Gabriel is embarking upon in this book are so well-written that it's almost as if you could slip them write into a screenplay without much effort。 You could adapt this into an anime， animated series， TV show， or movie without much issue at all。 I just thank goodness Kristoff was clear on the diversity of the characters when he wrote the book so there would be no confusion if it were ever to BE adapted！Some of the language is simply beautiful as it flows， but here's where I run into what kept this book from being a 5-star book: the issue of memory。 Memory doesn't work in a linear and clear fashion like this book depicts。 The thing is， telling someone your own history deliberately and automatically makes you an unreliable narrator。 That means we can't trust our protagonist， Gabriel， for shit。 And I think， again， Kristoff isn't trying to be condescending here: I think he fully expects us readers to not trust Gabriel's story in its entirety。 And it's a smart move， when this book is the first in a series。 You have to leave them wanting more， right？ We have questions we want answered， right？ One of the things I love best about this book are the ILLUSTRATIONS！ Bon Orthwick did the interior illustrations for this book， and they are utterly gorgeous。 They are definitely true to Orthwick's usual style， but they also seem to have a bit of an Art Nouveau-meets-Renaissance feel to them。。。 as if Alphonse Mucha had tried to put a little Botticelli in his paintings。 They are so beautiful I feel like people will be begging to have prints made big enough to put up on their walls （and that's totally deserved！）。I already can't wait for the next book， because I need to KNOW THINGS。 I'd like to thank St。 Martin's Press for giving me the opportunity to give this book a fair and honest review， and Jay Kristoff for writing such a spectacular book！ 。。。more

Absolutely magnificent！ I’m a fan of vampire lore and I have to say this is one of the best I’ve ever read！ The world building and vampiric lore painted by Kristoff is phenomenal。 The action was exciting and gruesome。 The characters fully fleshed out。 I love the concept of Silversaints and pale bloods，cold bloods， high bloods， anciens and all shades in between。 The Holy Grail itself is at stake in an Empire overpowered by daysdeath。 For my tastes， this is the best Kristoff has ever written。

Arc provided by NetGalley This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year， Jay did not disappoint！ This book was so addictive， dark， gory， heartbreaking and leave you wanting more！ I love thats its told in alternating povs of when Gab is young， when hes captured and a few years before。 It shows how became the man he is because of his hardships and losses。 We have so many different fun diverse characters， some awesome animals and such an interesting world。 I loved it！ Can wait to read more！

⪡⪡⪡ voilà ⪢⪢⪢To show you what exactly I feel toward this book :and， but no seriously ， this book is phenomenon No matter the vengeance I’d sworn， nor the life that had been stolen from me， nor the endless ache inside my chest。 Because even in darkest hours， that ache let me know I was still alive。 It was as my love had told me， as she’d always said。 Hearts only bruise。 They never break。 ~to tell y'all the truth ，I haven't read a individually written book by jay kristoff and boy this book is ⪡⪡⪡ voilà ⪢⪢⪢To show you what exactly I feel toward this book :and， but no seriously ， this book is phenomenon No matter the vengeance I’d sworn， nor the life that had been stolen from me， nor the endless ache inside my chest。 Because even in darkest hours， that ache let me know I was still alive。 It was as my love had told me， as she’d always said。 Hearts only bruise。 They never break。 ~to tell y'all the truth ，I haven't read a individually written book by jay kristoff and boy this book is a beautifully written beast that has heightened up my expectations。 Honestly how much do you know about vampire nature？？ Vampire books can be really hit or miss， but the history and mythos of the vampire have so much to offer。 By the historian doing this though， it adds extra depth and insight and makes for clever worldbuilding when explaining intricacies such as the vampire houses， or familial powers or legacies， etc… Gabriel’s “I don’t give a fuck”-attitude is prevalent in these exchanges too， especially when Gabriel opts to time hop in his tale instead of telling it chronologically， to the frustration of Jean-François。 The Silversaint calmly signals the word PATIENCE that is tattooed onto his knuckles。~With this being the setup， in addition to the above-mentioned “present-day” storyline， there are two past timelines that the killer recounts。 The first of these surrounds the events of Gabriel’s teenage years including his relationships with his parents and sisters， daysdeath and the increased strength and threat of the vampire empire， his infatuation with blood， and his perplexing abilities which leads Gabriel to the brotherhood of the Silversaints。 The second of the past accounts finds a thirty-something， disgruntled， addict Gabriel， whose deeds are the tales of legends。 He reluctantly joins a sort of fellowship， bemused to find himself part of a prophecy that relates to a god that Gabriel thinks is a prick。~Gabriel is an awesome character。 He’s humorous， bitter， witty， sweary， and world-weary。 He isn’t thrilled to have to tell his tale to the vampire historian but， as the stories progress， there is some excellent back-and-forth banter between the duo。 An element that often made me smirk is when the historian will tap his quill on his manuscript， a nonchalant reminder to Gabriel that the Queen of Vampires wishes for him to explain certain parts in-depth， as if to a child。~As Kristoff jokes in his GR review of this novel， this is definitely for adults and is “not a book for children”。 I’d hesitate to say that it is a bit too dark and violent for even the youths of the vampire empire。 also he is not joking about "It is quite smutty and bloody。 "Bloodsmutty" if you will。" and "But， it's pretty epic。 Like "best book I've ever written" epic。" cause this book damn single-handedly will get your exceptions high。 don't believe me ， try it out。~Simply put， Empire of the Vampire is an impressively built beast， bursting with supernatural lore and promise。 With plenty of detail and twists to keep the reader intrigued， we’re predicting this to be a new favorite of the genre。 Empire of the Vampire is packed with many stand-out scenes， and knowing that this is only a portion of de Leon’s legendary tale， I’ll wait to see what come next for this series。 。。。more
